Roughly three years ago, Hollywood was officially putting together the ensemble for the Minecraft movie. With Jason Mamoa (Aquaman) to star alongside director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), there was an interesting aura that could be a good film. Alongside the later addition of Jack Black (Nacho Libre) as Steve, it was shaping to be another standout fill to add to Hess’ filmography.
With the last trailer out in late February, the picture painted for the Minecraft movie was set and it was at least to be a fun, and quotable experience that will fill theaters. Alongside the collaboration with McDonald’s to offer virtual goodies & adult Happy Meals would be interesting for those anticipating the film’s release.
Opening day, Minecraft already generated more than $57 million according to the initial box office readings. Now with the weekend behind us, Minecraft has now set a new record for video game adaptations. From The Hollywood Reporter, Minecraft’s opening was recorded with $313.2 million globally. This fast payout for the film happens to be a new record for films of the same cloth.
This achievement has more than doubled what The Super Mario Bros. Movie generated in the same time; accruing 146.4 million then in its three-day window. And this follows the belly up reviews for the film on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the success in theaters financially, critic scores only favored it at 48 percent. Audience score now sits at 88 percent.Â
Currently, Minecraft is on track to be a billion dollar success for Warner Bros. The next record is total box office which The Super Mario Bros. Movie holds grossing a total of 1.36 billion. It still stands as the first video game film to set the record. You can read the full report by heading here.
