While Sega & Paramount has established itself with the Sonic the Hedgehog series over the course of these past few years setting a new bar for video game film franchises, Nintendo alongside Universal over the course of a few months stood in the way of the sun. After hitting theaters back in April, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was projected and has since overtaken more than $1 billion in box office sales globally.
Looking ahead, it is certain more Nintendo films with Illumination is on the way. Previously, Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed more is planned with the Minions creator. Additionally, The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma does share excitement on the idea of a film adaptation. Howbeit, he does not confirm one is in the pipeline.
Well in a new episode of The Hot Mic podcast, insider Jeff Sneider says that Universal-Illumination is close to finishing talks on a movie for The Legend of Zelda. You can watch the segment of the video below:
“I’m told that Universal is, in fact, closing a ‘big deal’ with the Nintendo corporation for The Legend of Zelda. Zelda is looking like the next big Illumination-Nintendo franchise, which again- which we were all sort of expecting. I’m told that is happening. It’s going to cost Universal a pretty penny because- y’know the success of Super Mario and Nintendo knows its worth at this point […] I’m told that is going to be a reality.”
As for other endeavors on the way for Nintendo in the movie theater, we are certain a sequel for The Super Mario Bros. Movie will come. Even more, Luigi voice actor Charlie Day went on to share his interest in a Luigi’s Mansion spin-off film if it were to come to fruition later down the road.
