This past September, Nintendo launched its online service for the Switch and since then about a third of console owners have subscribed to the new service. The number of online members has hit 9.8 million and that is not counting free trial accounts, but it does include discounted family memberships for up to eight consoles.

The Nintendo Online Service debuted at a perfect time where Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was launching a couple months after. It was clear that the game would be used for online a lot and for tournaments as well. Nintendo took advantage of that pretty well and we can only assume with Animal Crossing and Pokemon coming later this year that the subscriber count will keep going up.

One of the other great things about the online service is that it’s only $19.99 which you need that for if you want to play online, cloud saves, and using voice chat through the smartphone app. Nintendo also offers classic NES titles, but it’s still not at the level of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games with Gold.

The Nintendo Switch had passed over 34 million units sold worldwide since its launch in 2017 and it’s creeping up on the Xbox One. With rumors about Nintendo revealing other Switch models at E3, the company says they have no plans to show anything in June.
