In the recent forecast told for Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch in the past month or so now, dramatic changes are coming to the game internally and on the surface of the approaching sequel. Firstly, game director Jeff Kaplan and veteran Blizzard developer announced to be departing from the studio after nearly two decades working for the team. However, that is only the first news break leaving fans with their mouths wide open.
Later in a Overwatch 2 livestream pressing on the second entry on the way, Blizzard Entertainment disclosed that matchmaking will not be returning similarly to the original game. In that, the multiplayer portion this time around will feature 5v5 playstyle removing a second Tank player from the equation entirely.
But, the pipeline does not close there just yet. In a new update video, Overwatch is to expect cross-progression play in a new update later on. You can watch the development update in the video below:
“From its inception, Overwatch has been all about bringing player and communities together. A future worth fighting for is aspirational, but it is also inclusive,” Aaron Keller, game director explains. “We have players from all over the world, from all walks of life, playing across all of our platforms. But they’re not always able to play with each other. This is why we’re excited to announce that cross-play will be coming to Overwatch.”
Keller alongside the accompanied FAQ for the coming update goes on to clarify on what exactly will be executed when cross-play is enabled. For starters, aim-assist will only be activated when playing in console lobbies, but, not when grouping with PC users. PC players are also told not to queue with console lobbies if changing their peripheral to a controller as well. Similar to Apex Legends, console owners will play coexistingly while PC users are in an exclusive retainer until grouping with other players.
Recently, Blizzard Entertainment went to break the unfortunate news that BlizzCon will be absent this fall. “The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November.” You can read the full report by heading here.
