For PlayStation 5, the platform continues to finesse into new records and placements in contrast to its predecessors and other popular hardware from before. Most recently, it was reported that the PlayStation 5 is already exceeding expectations despite the silicon shortage against the PlayStation 4. In that, it sold more than 3 million this past quarter while the latter only managed 600,000 at the time.

Additionally, the PlayStation 5 previously overtook its older sibling PlayStation 4 in record time for the number of units sold in the first fiscal year as well. But overall, PlayStation 5 sales continue to surge as it already hits eight-digits in the first year already. As per the most recent financial report, PlayStation 5 sold more than 10 million units since this past November.

More notably from a discussion over at gamesindustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan shared that user engagement is also at an all-time high for PlayStation 5. The discovery comes as a surprise as its overcoming to PlayStation 4 with the still ongoing scarcity of units available.

Engagement on the platform is the highest that we’ve ever seen whichever way you look at it.  Whether it’s the number of people measured by a metric such as MAU [Monthly Active Users], or whether it’s the time that these people spend playing games. Both of these metrics are showing very significant double-digit growth compared to the launch window of PS4, the previous high-water mark.

We were confident that this would be the case, we believed profoundly in the feature set of our new platform, and we worked really hard internally and with our partners to make sure that the game line-up was really strong, and we have continued to pepper the community with excellent PlayStation Studios’ games like MLB The Show, Returnal, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. But fair to say that the engagement has surprised us, in a very pleasant way.

Elsewhere in the report, Creative Strategies President and Principal Analyst Carolina Milanesi further elaborates on the situation with Sony’s success with the PlayStation 5. “The milestone is notable especially considering the supply constraint Sony and the rest of the tech industry operated under over the past year. I am sure the pandemic played some role in generating demand as people were stuck at home spending more time on video consumption and gaming.

“Consumers who were able to retain their job and work from home and therefore had a regular income might have also ended up with more disposable income because the lack of other forms of entertainment like movies, theater and travel freed up money.

“Yet there is no question PS5 itself was a great upgrade from an overall experience perspective. The hardware, the availability of the two price points and content like Miles Morales that brought to life the enhancements really delivered for Sony.” However, not all is up on the charts for Sony Interactive Entertainment following the recent financial report.

Transcribed by Video Game Chronicles, it was discovered that PlayStation Plus active users decreased more than a million units: the largest decreased shift in subscribers in almost a decade. But, Sony CFO Horoki Totoki disclosed the firm is not worried by the recent learning. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you surprised by the amount of engagement ongoing over for PlayStation 5?
