For PlayStation 5, it is no surprise the amount of buzz the platform continues to receive for retailers asking when more will be in stock. Despite the high demand and little replenishment, the PlayStation 5 is the highest grossing console in U.S. history according to NPD Group. But, this holiday the limited stock left the firm being outperformed by Xbox Series S – especially on Black Friday this past November.
Additionally, Sony Interactive Entertainment is said to be allocating production for older hardware to meet the demand according to one report. From Bloomberg, PlayStation 4 production is to increase while limited components is available for the new console. Additionally, it was reported at the same time that Microsoft discontinued the Xbox One as Xbox Series S manufacturing increased.
In the latest financial report from corporate Sony, it is revealed that the PlayStation 5 has now outsold the Nintendo Wii U. The 2012-released console as per Nintendo has sold 13.56 million units. However, the PlayStation 5 from the statement by Sony shares over 17.2 million units sold before the end of December. The previous financial report ahead of November foreshadowed PlayStation 5 exceeding Wii U sales then.
But looking ahead, the next notable milestone for the PlayStation 5 will be the Xbox One. However, the duration to do so might be limited thanks to insufficient parts available. While the Nintendo Switch managed to do so in a third of the Xbox One’s lifespan, this could be more challenging for Sony’s latest console to do the same.
From the same financial report by Sony, the firm also elaborates on its ambitions with the Bungie acquisition.
