When comparing the Xbox Series X to the PlayStation 5, the two consoles offer different things aside from their contrasting appearances. While the PlayStation 5 aims to introduce a new generation of titles alongside intuitive elements thanks to its DualSense controller, its Microsoft competitor looks to recuperate consumer’s libraries from previous iterations of the Xbox family. The firm is doing so through the support of Smart Delivery.
While Microsoft has announced that backwards compatibility will be another feature to do so for the array of titles that released on all Xbox systems, Smart Delivery in particular allows players to keep playing new anticipated titles that they purchased on Xbox One and carry over to the approaching Xbox Series X. And alike the PlayStation 5, Microsoft also aims to release a handful of first-party projects to the new system as well.
But unlike Microsoft’s ambitions to secure user purchases that transition to the newer console, Sony has yet to disclose if the firm will offer a similar feature alike Smart Delivery. But according to a report from GameSpark, Sony does not look to be abiding to the possibility of enabling cross-generation purchasing for coming PlayStation 5 owners.
According to a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson, the firm has instated “plans to be as flexible as possible in supporting any publishers choosing to provide upgrade plans.” This stands in contrast to how Smart Delivery is decided by the studio themselves rather than the jurisdiction being handled by the publisher of the respected property.
Speaking of supported titles for the next-generation console, Sony disclosed with developers last month that titles aimed to ship following July 13 of this year must also be submitted for support this month. While aimed properties will be readied for both consoles, it does not directly ensure there will be cross-buy support for said game.
In discussion of Smart Delivery implementation, Microsoft previously announced that the firm has partnered with roughly 140 studios for Xbox One titles when consumers decide to migrate to the newer unit. You can read the full report by heading here.
