Sledgehammer Games, known for its work on the popular first-person shooter franchise, Call of Duty, seems to be developing a new game in a completely different genre. According to the studio’s Senior Creative Director, they are working on an “Unannounced Action RPG”.
This comes from Ben Wanat’s LinkedIn profile, where his position lists the following:
Creative director for Unannounced action RPG
– Franchise planning, pitching, hiring, planning
– Directing prototypes, player mechanics for mechanics-rich design
– World layout, location layout
– Concept and asset creation for cultures, environments, characters
– Lore books for world, cultures, languages
Creative Direction assistance on Call of Duty: Vanguard
– Story planning, character mechanics, helped on single-player campaign direction

Sledgehammer Games has experience developing one style of game, and that’s first-person shooters. Their first project was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), as they co-developed with Infinity Ward. Their latest work was done on Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, assisting Treyarch and Raven Software.
Since Microsoft acquired Activision, this could be something that Xbox Game Studios decided for the studio to make something other than what it’s been used to. At this time, Sledgehammer Games or Microsoft have mentioned anything about a new action RPG being in development.
What do you think this unannounced game could be?
