This year alone, video game adaptations have started to be branded with a new marking in terms of expectations. With the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, fans ultimately received the film in favor of other adaptations that came for the past two decades. In one report, it was one of the most financially successful hits at the box office for 2022. At the same time, it is also Jim Carrey’s most successful film to date as well.

Looking ahead, Nintendo plans to make a similar impact with its upcoming collaborative production involving Illumination, The Super Mario Bros Movie. Casting for the film originally surprised many during its brief feature back in fall 2021. It was in a later announcement that the film will push its release to 2023 the following spring.

Recently, word broke out on a teaser for the motion picture to take place at New York Comic-Con and reiterates on the film’s April box office release. Nintendo even held a specific Nintendo Direct for the movie. You can watch the official teaser trailer in the video below:

From the brief footage, we get a glimpse at the Mushroom Kingdom with Jack Black’s Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key’s Toad, and Chris Pratt’s Mario. There is even a brief moment featuring Charlie Day’s Luigi. The description also lists additional casting, reading “Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.”

While the overall image of the film shows to be a welcomed adaptation, some fans are mixed on the starring plumber. Although it is unlike the initial reception of Sonic the Hedgehog, many feel the presentation for Mario is fairly jarring compared to what is expected in the games. Despite that, the performances from Key & Black were both well-received which is a good sign.

Are you excited for The Super Mario Bros. Movie after seeing the teaser trailer?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits theaters April 7, 2023.
