In the current day of age within the gaming industry, the continuous negative connotation towards lootboxes lead on as more developers continue to scrap the business model of borderline gambling for their upcoming titles. The concept even being presented ahead of national committees, microtransactions have become a concern that many feel should be regulated regardless of their digital backings.
Gears of War developer The Coalition made it evident with the problem surrounding lootboxes and decided for September’s Gears 5 that there will be no trace of them in the title. In the latest blog post from the Microsoft-owned studio titled “How To Earn Content in Gears 5”, The Coalition went right off the bat to announce that there will be not lootboxes nor a season pass for the upcoming title.
In Gears 5, our goal is to create a player-first experience when it comes to in-game content, and it starts with this:
-
No Season Pass
-
No Gear Packs
-
DLC Maps are free for matchmaking and Private Play
-
Exclusive earnable content in the all-new Tour of Duty system
-
All store purchases are direct, no RNG so you always know what you will get
Though the more expected pay-to-win microtransactions are gone from the forthcoming action title, that doesn’t mean they are completely gone. Continuing on in the post, it was shared that players can still pay for cosmetic items as well as XP boosts using real world cash through the game’s premium currency (Iron).
There are even randomized supply crates that players can receive, but the developer clarified that the said crates are only given based on the time players are active in the game. As well as detailing the planned Tour of Duty content system which rewards players based on score placement with no monetary requirement to unlock exclusive items.
Gears 5 will be available for Xbox One and PC on September 10, 2019.
