At Bethesda Game Studios, the team has remained busy with plenty of its legacy releases in 2025 alone. Earlier this year, the RPG developer shipped The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Additionally, 2015’s Fallout 4 was rereleased this week under its new ‘Anniversary’ moniker for current generation PlayStation 5 & Xbox Series consoles.
But, let’s not forget it announced The Elder Scrolls VI nearly a decade ago. Since unveiling the development, there has been radio silence on Bethesda’s behalf. Enough time has passed that even Todd Howard has addressed it will likely be his last major release at the game studio. And, all that we know is that half a decade in, the project is only in a very early, playable state as of 2024.
Now with 2025 nearly out the door, Howard has reapproached The Elder Scrolls VI in a recent interview. When speaking to GQ, he shared that the release for the sequel to Skyrim is “still a long way off.” More surprising, Howard did say something similar back in 2021 when he expressed then that the title was still in its ‘design phase’ nearly three years after being announced.
Originally, many anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI to ship sometime in 2026. Amid the previous FTC case for the Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft lawyers revealed that the highly-anticipated fantasy RPG was projected to release next year. Additionally, other internal murmurs pointed to the title being an Xbox exclusive at one point as well.
Now, it appears that the game is internally propped up for a 2028 release if things fall into place this time. X user @kiwitalkz shared that Howard was not lying in regard to his recent comment. “Todd definitely isn’t lying when he says Elder Scrolls 6 is a ‘long ways off.’ Internally I’ve heard they are aiming for 2028 (in a worst case scenario, even 2029!!)”
