After more than a two year wait, Season 2 for The Last of Us is currently rolling out on Max. Since the debut of the new season, it faced impressive viewership recording over 5.3 million views for its opening back in mid April. And before the new season even aired, HBO already greenlit The Last of Us for a third season to continue to story for Naughty Dog’s most popular IP.

According to an interview with Neil Druckmann when speaking to GQ, he explained that plans were already in motion for Season 3 and the current set of episodes would not be fulfilling for the plot. More recently, HBO executive Francesca Orsi told Deadline in February that at least four seasons are to likely be made for the series to properly conclude.

Now in a recent interview with Collider, writer Craig Mazin tells the outlet that the show will effectively need a fourth season to completely tell the plot it has for the television adaptation for The Last of Us. “There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”

Mazin adds: “We always think ahead. We thought ahead to Season 3 and Season 4, to try to get as much visibility as we can, so that we don’t end up in a situation where we’re sitting down and getting into details for a season and then going, “Oh, man, if only we hadn’t had that person say that one line or be in that spot or wear that jacket, this would be so much cooler.” So, we really do try to think things through fundamentally.

He continues: “Now, we’re actually in more of a traditional cliffhangery mode, where you’re telling a story, and then you end the season with something that says, “Whoa, this is going to change a whole bunch of things, and we’ll see you when we get back and pick it up from there.” We ask ourselves a lot of questions and we think about what we ought to do when we think about what the narrative that exists affords us and that we should do.”

Elsewhere, Gail actress Catherine O’Hara when speaking to Variety disclosed that Season 3 is to follow Abby’s perspective more closely. When asked if she will return for new episodes, she answered: “I don’t know. Craig did say definitely not this next season. It’s the Abby story. Maybe. But I think it was to serve Joel and Ellie.”

Are y0u interested in the direction for The Last of Us?
