While developer Red Barrels left a large lasting impression on its players with the initial release of Outlast in 2014 followed by the sequel Outlast II later on in 2017, the game stands to be a hallmark for the survival horror genre. However, the game studio since remains fairly dormant on its next project. But, it is certain that the next release is to surely be set within the realm of Outlast once more.
Back in late 2019, Red Barrels revealed a new experience – The Outlast Trials. Unlike previous entries, the newest project injects horrific trials against subjects to overcome the obstacles. At the time of the announcement, it was shared that The Outlast Trials will be a solo experience or indulged with up to four players in cooperative play.
More than a year following the game’s inception, Red Barrels has spared a new trailer for the game showcasing a first look at gameplay for the title. You can watch the new trailer in the video below:
“Set in the era of the Cold War, human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited by the good folks at the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control,” the synopsis reads from the studio’s website. “In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morals will be challenged, your endurance tested, and your sanity crushed. All in the name of progress, science, and profit. Survive alongside friends or dare to face the experiments by yourself.”
Initially, developer Red Barrels while announcing the game did not list an official release date for the game. However, there was some suggestion that players could expect the game as early as 2021. But, the new footage concludes by sharing that The Outlast Trials is now planned to deliver later in 2022.
