After two decades of leading the first-person shooter genre, Ubisoft entered against Call of Duty with its repertoire of IPs. That is xDefiant. Our review for the game deemed it a 7/10: “At the moment, this game doesn’t have enough content to keep coming back to, but it’s still an average first-person shooter. There is potential and we could be looking at the beginning of what can be a standout Ubisoft title, but only time will tell.”

Unlike its counterpart, XDefiant is a free-to-play title. Upon release earlier this year, the game faced over 11 million players in total. However, the game has faced a downfall in its users in the months following. As of last month, the game has dropped immensely in active players with the internet spinning stories on the game already at death’s door.

But in a new blog post pressing on the Year 1 plans for XDefiant, the first-person shooter is far from closing. “I just want to quickly address the status of the game. i.e. is the game dying? No, the game is absolutely not dying,” the author wrote in a response to the growing concern for the future of XDefiant in recent weeks.

“We know there are things we need to improve like Netcode/Hitreg and adding more content to progression, but the game is doing well. We just want it to do better. And we do that by addressing the concerns of our community which has always been the plan. Ubisoft is very much behind us and has allocated more resources to the team in order for us to do that.”

And this is not the first time that Ubisoft has answered directly to its titles being dead shortly after release. In 2022 following the release of Roller Champions, it was suggested that the game was already in danger. But in a statement from the publisher, the series is not going anywhere. The game is still active as of writing in 2024. You can read the full report by heading here.
