Since the proper showcase for the Nintendo Switch 2, there has been plenty of suspicion towards how physical releases will be handled moving forward. Concerning Game-Key Cards, it acts similar to select releases on Xbox & PlayStation that require a follow-up install to full download a game. This has led to select releases being focused on its tangible version like Cyberpunk 2077 where the full game on cartridge met 75% sales being physical purchases.
But it is unfortunately a minority of most publishers. It was acknowledged that a large sum of releases on Nintendo Switch 2 will be Game-Key Cards rather than the latter 64 GB cartridges. Industry leaders have shared disappointment on the decision for Nintendo hardware moving forward. But, distributors like Limited Run Games & Video Games Plus have pledged to strive for proper physical cartridges over Game-Key Cards.
What isn’t being discussed is the perks of these titles on Game-Key Cards. With the recent release of Star Wars Outlaws on Nintendo Switch 2, the latest Game-Key Card shows a lot of promise with many convinced to be the best console version of the game. On BlueSky, audio architect Rob Bantin shares that performance faced better results on the Game-Key Card ultimately.
“I think if we’d designed a game for Switch 2 from the ground up it might have been different. As it was, we’d build a game around the SSDs of the initial target platforms, and then the Switch 2 came along a while later. In this case I think our leadership made the right call,” Bantin elaborated further in the thread. So for this situation, a proper native release would not find the same results as on a Game-Key Card.
For more on Star Wars Outlaws, Rectify Gaming scored the title a 7/10. “Star Wars Outlaws is visually stunning, but beneath its beauty, there are some rough edges. Despite these flaws, I remain optimistic that Star Wars Outlaws will improve significantly with further updates and community feedback.” You can read the full review by heading here.
