When the conversation about Valve & in-house hardware comes up, the discussion is starting to make a turn for the better. After the launch and eventual closure of the Steam Machine previously, it was assumed that the firm would be done releasing its own devices. But talking points shifted with the release of the Steam Deck. Alongside an OLED Model as well, there is a new demand for Valve peripherals.
In late 2024, a new report went out which indicated that home consoles are now back on the table from Valve. Brad Lynch reported that ‘Project Fremont’ was new hardware that featured SteamOS for the prototype that operated on new custom AMD chips. But it is not the only hardware likely on the way. In the past, Valve has spoken on the next Steam Deck, but said it is further away from releasing.
And even Digital Foundry concluded the Switch 2 does perform well ahead of the handheld, so it is certain a follow-up will come in due time. One device that is ready for a new release is virtual reality. The Valve Index shipped back in 2019 and has been a stable platform for VR on Steam. But reports have pointed towards a wireless SKU that challenges the Meta Quest. Project Deckard has went on record to being aimed for a late 2025 release.
On X, @GabeFollower noted that titles for Deckard are already ready to ship back in February alongside a $1200 price tag – only $200 more than the Index. Last week, Valve filed a new trademark for ‘Steam Frame’ which coincides with information about Deckard. Lynch corroborated that a recent SteamVR beta also rolled out which points towards Frames for spatial gaming.
“STEAM FRAME™ trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of computer game consoles for recreational game playing; video game consoles; video game accessories, namely, controllers for video games,” the trademark description reads. So alongside featuring a wireless peripheral, XR experiences are also likely to be expected from Steam Frame.
