The PS4 Neo is expected to take E3 by storm next month, however a new report states that it was never to exist let alone be at E3. An analysis of a recent VR World article by Reddit user Flight 714 is what has led to this speculation.
AMD, the producer of the current PlayStation 4 transistor, is looking to streamline its production process to support new 14-nanometer FinFER transistor. The PS4, however, uses 28-nanometer planar transistors. In most normal circumstances this would not be an issue for Sony, they would take the old chip and shrink it to the new size. But this time it is not possible as AMD are also looking to introduce new Zen Core CPUs.
This second development forced Sony to make a tough decision. Either create a whole new custom production line and continue producing the PS4 as it is currently known, or conform to AMD’s new standard and release a new model. As the former would have cost the company an exorbitant fee the decision was made to release a new updated version of the console, the Neo.
After deciding to create this updated system, the company then had to decide on how to market and sell it. Hence the adoption of the currently rumoured plan, where all new games will run on the PS4 and the Neo but there could be some graphical and performance improvements when utilising the newer system.
Although this is currently all speculation, its credibility is helped by the fact that Microsoft is rumoured to also be releasing an updated version of the Xbox One later this year. How does this help you ask? AMD also supply transistors to Microsoft. None of this verified however and the Microsoft rumour could just be to provide competition for the Neo.
Either way, be this report true or not, it will be interesting to see how gamers take to the PS4 Neo especially with the console still being relatively young in its life cycle. What are your thoughts? Will you be purchasing a PS4 Neo or just sticking with your current version?
