When the Nintendo Switch 2 was first revealed by Nintendo earlier this year, they revealed that some older Switch games would be getting a “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition”. At launch, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom received Switch 2 Editions.
Later on, we’ve seen Super Mario Party Jamboree get a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Kirby will be next.
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Explained
While the Switch 2 is capable of playing the original Switch games, there may be some questions as to what a “Switch 2 Edition” is. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of a game is a bundle that will include not only the original game.
The Switch 2 Edition of a game comes with enhancements to take advantage of the capabilities of the Switch 2 console. It can vary by game. They can include visual improvements, new features, and new game modes.
For example, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is getting its own Switch 2 Edition, but it will also come with the new Star-Crossed World DLC that includes lots of new single-player content. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will have a Switch 2 Edition because it will be released on the original Switch, and it includes support for mouse controls using Joy-Con 2 Controllers.
There are many other first-party Switch games that have yet to receive the Switch 2 Edition, including Animal Crossing, ARMS, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and more.
