Detective Pikachu Star Shares Uncertainty Of A Second Film On The Way

Back in 2019 prior to the age of better received video game films, Detective Pikachu hit the box office with the preconception of a misfire release from Nintendo & Warner Bros. Pictures. With the hyper realistic-looking Pokémon scattered throughout the film, many were unsure if this is the live-action production the franchise needs. But, the motion picture despite its skewed response from viewer did happen to perform extremely well in the box office.

However, the year following Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog overtook that record for a video game adapted film and some with more than $100 million in its opening weekend. But, it appears that runoff from the first Pokémon movie and now this – more films alike appear to continue meeting new milestones in the box office. It was reported that the second Detective Pikachu movie already got a writer, so it was only in due time.

But, in a recent interview with Inverse, Detective Pikachu lead Justice Smith disclosed uncertainty of a second film coming.

I would love to participate in Detective Pikachu 2. I don’t know if it’s going to happen. I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don’t think it’s going to happen. I really hope so though. Honestly, I’m such a huge fan, who knows, who knows? I hope so.

It is no secret that Smith is a fan of the beloved pocket monsters brand, so him taking on the leading role for another project would be a given. But, he is unaware of what is underway for the supposed sequel. Again noted that Oren Uziel is to pen the script for the follow-up officially since 2019, perhaps Smith is not involved with the production to his knowledge.

Additionally, director Rob Letterman is working on a separate video game movie as well. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the outlet indicates that Letterman is to direct a Beyond Good & Evil film that is in a tied deal with Netflix. You can read the full report by heading here.
