
Exploring the heights of what is possible with the rich library of Nintendo IPs, it is even more exciting that the Japanese firm is tackling film adaptations now. Already, we witnessed the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie as well as it confirming with Illumination a sequel is on the way. Even most recently it was reported a Donkey Kong film is being eyed by Universal Pictures as well.
Additionally, Nintendo is collaborating with Sony Pictures to create a live-action The Legend of Zelda motion picture. Thus far, all that has been confirmed is that the film will release in March 2027. Elsewhere, Nintendo during a shareholders Q&A pressed that the further investment into films will bring the same level of attention & involvement to properly adapt its franchises.
Amid the dry spill of news for The Legend of Zelda movie – especially since it will be the first live-action picture from Nintendo – rumors did point towards Hunter Schaefer to be cast for the role of Princess Zelda. The Euphoria star was said to be in Nintendo’s crosshairs as the potential lead according to DanielRPK. However, a new update on its leads was shared by Nintendo on Wednesday.
Via a post on X, the official Nintendo account announced its casting for both Zelda & Link. The titular princess has will be portrayed by Bo Bragason (Renegade Nell, The Jetty) whilst the heroic, pointed-ear protagonist will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Son of a Critch, Pinocchio). Shigeru Miyamoto on behalf of Nintendo in a statement says:
“This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.” He adds: “The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”
