While a beloved IP, Saints Row (2022) was not the answer that many were hoping for a modern adaptation. Although the DNA was there, many of the delivery fell flat and the studio suffered because of that. After the poor initial sales, Volition was shifted to another division under parent company Embracer Group as a result.
By the time that game turned a full one year old, Volition was officially closed. With roughly thirty years of the team operating creating Saints Row, Red Faction, and other franchises, it shuttered its doors permanently. As a byproduct of the motion, former employees formed a new studio – Shapeshifter Games. Although a smaller operation, the team would still emphasize on its AAA strengths.
Now in a new development surrounding the Saints Row IP, it appears that a new game could surface from the ashes of Volition’s closure. According to Chris Stockman via a post on Reddit, he shared that Embracer Group has entertained him to offer a pitch for a new game. So while details on how much will materialize on this effort, nothing has been put on paper just yet.
“ I’ve been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row reboot!” he writes. “I can’t say anything more than that but my dreams for this game just became a little more than just dreams! Update: it won’t be a VR game. I’m really going back to my roots!” What can be expected of the new game has already been expressed directly by Stockman previously. Speaking to TheGamer, Stockman sheds his idea of a prequel set in 70s-era Stillwater.
“What I would have done was to take the franchise back to the ’70s and do a period piece, a prequel of how the gangs from the first one started. You’re running around with a crew of teens that ended up as the main characters for the first game. You could really go all in on the ’70s theme with big afros, bell-bottoms, and the music of that whole period.”
What are you hopeful will come of another stab at the Saints Row series?
