Over the past handful of months, there has been a recalibration to how Warner Bros. is approaching its video game division. The loudest of the revelation includes the closure of Monolith Productions & its Wonder Woman game being shuttered. And, Player First Games also closes its doors roughly a year after releasing MultiVersus. Elsewhere, the firm has addressed its focus will be pitted towards DC Comics, Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, and Game of Thrones moving forward.
As for the future projects on behalf of the AAA machine, it was reported Warner Bros. Montreal is given an ultimatum for a new Game of Thrones title. If not successful, it is said to be reduced to a support team. Additionally, the developing DCU under James Gunn is also expanding to games as he promised. He has hinted that Superman will likely make an appearance; nods to actor David Corenswet reprising his role.
Alongside Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, there is some structure for Warner Bros. Games moving forward. But compared to a year ago, it did not appear the division could move ahead without an acquisition of sorts. As for one potential candidate, Sony Interactive Entertainment recently addressed that it is not interested in proceeding with an acquisition.
“Right now, we don’t want to do a big Hollywood M&A deal. We want to build a solid base in our strengths of anime and games,” CEO Hiroki Totoki told Nikkei. In the past, Sony Interactive Entertainment has been tied to potential deals to welcome to PlayStation Studios. This time the PlayStation firm denounces the advancements. We saw this with Take-Two Interactive as established insider Jason Schreier dismantled the online claim.
