Developer Playground Games – most notable for the Forza Horizon IP – remains to stay busy in that regard. Just today, it was revealed that Forza Horizon 6 is officially coming this May to Xbox & PC. Also, a PlayStation 5 version is on the way for late 2026. However, the game studio is also tag-teaming a new release in the form of a remake for Fable. The game was announced all the way back in 2020 before the Xbox Series X|S release.
Now fast-forward to 2026, the game is still on the way. Almost a year ago in February 2025, Playground Games confirmed that Fable will not be releasing until 2026. So while the game cooked for a little bit longer, it was added to the itinerary for the following year. It was reported that announcements were ramping up for the platform’s 25th anniversary which also includes Halo: Campaign Evolved & Gears of War: E-Day as well.
On Thursday, Playground Games revealed a new gameplay overview for Fable slating the game to now release this autumn. And, the title will ship on PlayStation 5 at launch as well; first-time for the IP. You can watch the gameplay presentation in the video below:
“I think – in the original games and in our game as well – there’s a very British sensibility, a tone of voice, a way of thinking about things. And it goes to the humor as well – that British humor that the original games used to such great effect is an absolutely essential component of our game as well,” game director Ralph Fulton explains for Playgrounds interpretation of Fable. “And then it’s about choice and consequence. We call that freedom – in the sense that it’s the freedom to make the choices you want. It’s the freedom to be the kind of hero you want to be.”
He continues on the combat direction in Fable: “We’re taking the original game’s mix of melee, ranged, and magic – ‘Strength, Skill, and Will’ – and turning it into what we call style-weaving combat. We wanted to create a combat system which was fluid enough to allow you to really frictionlessly, seamlessly swap from melee to ranged to magic, without even a frame’s delay on it.
“The combat scenarios that you’re going to find in our game are often about groups of enemies – and usually a tactical mix of enemies who will force you into choosing how you use your ranged, your melee, and your magic to crowd control, and to pick them off, and really to navigate the particular combat challenge that a particular set of enemies presents to you. And there is still ample variety within those styles to allow you to pick the kind of fighter you want to be.”
