When The Last of Us aired on HBO, the show swiftly became a hot new IP for the streamer. Instantly, Season 2 for the show was on the way and plans for more, of course, was to come after it. Upon the release of Season 2 airing, it debuted with 5.3 million viewers at the time. And, the show was already greenlit for a following season. However, there was a dip in reception for the PlayStation TV series leaving many surprised the current trajectory from the first season.
However, there was enough momentum from Season 1 alone that discussions for four seasons were already in the pipeline. It was stated by HBO that four seasons is the game plan. Additionally, writer Craig Mazin told Collider that four seasons is essential for the plot to properly mature to fulfill the complete story it has ahead.
Well, it appears that is not the case anymore. According to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, The Last of Us is now pegged for Season 3 to be the cutoff for the series. “It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them,” the studio boss confirmed to the outlet. Makes matters worse, executive producer & Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann previously exited the production after Season 2 rolled out its episodes.
In a separate report from Deadline, it also reported that Season 3 will find a new face. Danny Ramirez who portrays Manny Alverez in the HBO series will not be returning. Details on the recasting has yet to be shared. The report comes at a surprise around the same time as the passing of Catherine O’Hara who played Gail Lynden – a character that was likely to return in Season 3 too.
