New Stranger Than Heaven Trailer Pinpoints Winter 2026 Release, Confirmed Like A Dragon Prequel

Developer Ryu Ga Gotoku has remained a well-oiled machine when it comes to shipping games. The Japanese game studio just launched Yakuza Kiwami 3 earlier this winter. But, there were some caveats. The release did delist Yakuza 3 Remastered which can no longer be purchased individually. And, RGG Studio also addressed that the Kiwami series has officially closed its doors for good now with the third game out on store shelves.

Looking ahead, the Like a Dragon team is moving on to a new IP. Earlier in December, it was confirmed that RGG Studio’s next game will be titled ‘Stranger Than Heaven’; formerly coined ‘Project Century’. The game recently held a ‘Xbox Presents’ broadcast earlier this Wednesday which gave the title a proper spotlight on the overall plot as well as a more in-depth look at the gameplay.

From the footage, it is revealed that Stranger Than Heaven will be a precursor to the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series as it revisits iconic settings like Sotenbori and the plot gives the foundational start for the Tojo Clan. You can watch the trailer in the video below:

“Stranger Than Heaven’s narrative spans 50 years, following the life of main character Makoto Daito. Born in the United States to an American father and a Japanese mother, Makoto loses both of his parents very young, and faces many struggles growing up in the west. In 1915, he decides to find a way to Japan, and stows away on a boat, where he is caught by Orpheus (Snoop Dogg),” the story overview reads for the game.

The core gameplay loop that propels the story for Stranger Than Heaven also takes place across multiple, real-time Japanese cities: Kokura, Fukouka (1915); Kure, Hiroshima (1929); Minami, Osaka (1943); Atami, Shizuoka (1951); Shinjuku, Tokyo (1965). One of the interesting mechanics that are highlighted in Stranger Than Heaven is Makoto’s ability to archive sounds from different eras to compose music to create unique music.

“These sounds can vary based on era, location, or time of day and are compiled in a library for later use. At certain points in the game, Makoto will encounter composers, and you’ll be able to use the collected sounds to create original compositions that have different instruments and moods, an interesting mechanic that’ll enable players to create some truly unique pieces of music.”
