After years of demand, fans finally were heard when we saw that Ryu Ga Gotoku was preparing to revisit Okinawa in the Like a Dragon series. It was discovered that Yakuza Kiwami 3 was in the pipeline through its actions on digital storefronts. Even more, the secret was directly out of the bag when a listing for the game was uncovered online.

But when the announcement was made, fans were flooded with emotions. While aspects of the remake like the Dark Ties campaign and new additions to the core Yakuza 3 experience would bring the game into the modern age, others were floored by the decisions from RGG Studio & Sega. One major critique is the original game’s limited availability come release. After Yakuza Kiwami 3 launches, the previous Yakuza 3 Remastered will be delisted exempt from purchasing the ‘Yakuza Complete Series bundle’.

Alongside other changes to what defined Yakuza 3 in the new Kiwami paintjob like its recasting for Rikiya Shimabukuro, certain plot retcons, and even the tropical shirt Kazuma Kiryu will wear at Sunshine Orphanage, fans are over more remakes for the classic releases. Well, it was revealed that RGG Studio is not moving forward with more similar projects in the past according to studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama in a livestream interview.

“I think ‘Yakuza Kiwami 3’ will be the last on, and the ‘Kiwami’ line will come to an end. I don’t think it’ll continue as the ‘Kiwami’ series anymore,” Yokoyama explained. “I think a different series will begin. And not something like ‘Like a Dragon 9,’ but rather a new series on a different line, with a different meaning. That might be something you’ll understand once you play ‘Yakuza Kiwami 3.’”

Currently, the only other confirmed project in development at Ryu Ga Gotoku is Stranger Than Heaven. The title is still in active development and has only recently confirmed its title after being dubbed ‘Project Century’ since its initial announcement. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you reassured there are now more Kiwami releases after Yakuza Kiwami 3?

Yakuza Kiwami 3 releases on February 12, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
