The changes currently taking place at XBOX are fairly radical, yet essential for the business model to be monetarily beneficial. It was revealed that four teams are to depart from XBOX Game Studios: Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Compulsion Games. Despite many changes within XBOX, the thing that will not be materialized is games being canceled. It confirmed its commitment to shipping what was announced previously.
Exclusives have also been an ongoing talking point as well. It was shared by Bloomberg that plans to launch new games in a multiplatform approach has been reduced to live-service while its “best titles” are to ship unique to XBOX. The outlet also laid out a new testament that Bethesda is to follow for its IPs to focus on moving forward: Doom, Quake, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Wolfenstein.
One development that has continued to shake the ground is towards the titles that are currently in production for teams that are no longer at XBOX Game Studios. According to GameFile, Undead Labs is not obligated to ship State of Decay 3 on XBOX Game Pass. The decision is up to the new owner of the game studio. Similarly, the same can be said for Ninja Theory’s Senua as well thanks to it also being sold off as well.
“The deal calls for continued funding and eventual release of State of Decay 3 but will not obligate the game to any Xbox-controlling terms, such as having to be on Game Pass,” the report reads regarding Undead Labs. Adding that Ninja Theory “is in a similar position to Undead Labs, with Microsoft having made a deal for a new owner for the studio, set to be revealed later this year.”
The politics surrounding Ninja Theory prior to the XBOX reset was that Microsoft willingly announced Senau in an effort to shop for a buyer. Other developments that followed the game’s announcement also included the cancellation of Project: Mara, a passion project that has been in development since 2020.
