Earlier this week, XBOX Game Studios & Ninja Theory announced Senua – a new installment in the nordic immersive story from the British game studio. While the game is paved for a 2027 launch window, there is still another project that the team has been piecing together for years. Back in 2020, Ninja Theory announced Project: Mara which explores new & experimental storytelling and tech for the title.

In a later Ninja Diaries in 2021, the developer shared that the team used bespoke technology to fully scan an apartment for the setting of the new game. So surely the game was expected to be piecing together with this ambitious approach to the project. Even according to Microsoft later on in 2024, another title was already greenlit to follow Project: Mara assuming the release is nearing.

However, with the announcement of the new Senua title, Ninja Theory has confirmed that Project: Mara will not be continued further. Instead, all effort is going to Senua and is said that fragments of the previous effort will be utilized towards the new title ultimately.

“And with the fact that we have the entire team working on this game, I suspect some people might ask what’s happened to Project Mara [a previously announced horror title] – I took the decision to not work on that any further,” studio head Dom Matthews shared. ”These decisions are never easy, but I did so to take the opportunity to have all of the talent and expertise in the studio, all 85 creatives, working together to realize the potential of what Senua can be.”

It is also understood that potentially the development budget for Project: Mara has ballooned beyond what Microsoft anticipated. In a previous FTC filing release, it was revealed that the development for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II cost the XBOX firm roughly $117 million for the final product to release.
