For decades, the argument of who could fundamentally & definitively be the PlayStation mascot has been the centerpiece for many arguments. While PlayStation has never mantled its own version of Mario or Master Chief, there have been plenty of candidates to fill that spot. Probably one with lengthy runtime and biggest impression is Sackboy of LittleBigPlanet. With over a handful of titles and spanning across multiple platforms, it is the one character to fill that role.
More recently, Sackboy did make a return to the spotlight for the PlayStation 5 with Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Additionally, the game did also receive extra attention when the game also launched on Steam later in 2022. However, the character did kind of stop its momentum there. Since then, a successor to being the PlayStation mascot is Astro Bot which won Game of the Year this past December at The Game Awards.
Now in 2025, there has been a noticeable change that is upsetting many players. While Sackboy has been on the sidelines, Sony Pictures updated the PlayStation Productions intro which removed Sackboy from the reel. User @realradec points this out in a post on X. Many users online gather this is how Sony plans to end the bloodline for Sackboy, although that is not confirmed.
And while Astro Bot has the spotlight currently for the position that Sackboy once donned, it was the other way around in the past. Back in 2024, Astro Bot was featured in Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Prior to the launch of its titular platformer in 2024, Astro Bot was recognized for Astro Bot: Rescue Mission & Astor’s Playroom – significantly less impressionable releases compared to the newest title.
Recently, Astro Bot has also been considered for a live-action adaptation. From PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash, there has been discussions internally on exploring possibilities. You can read the full report by heading here.
