The studio over at Team Sonic have shown to grasp towards the nostalgic route when it comes to Sega’s Blue Blur with these past few releases for the Sonic the Hedgehog titles. The team does this through a line of animated shorts similar to the 1993 titular show, and centered around the respected game. We have already seen this with Sonic Mania and the more recent Team Sonic Racing, now the developer looks to continue this tradition onwards with the newer titles down the line.
According to an interview with Comicbook.com, Director of Animation Yukio Kusumoto assures that the same animation shorts will also be carried on to market upcoming games prior to their release. Here is his full statement on the topic:
I can say we have a plan of continuing this trend creating short-form content per game release, and we can’t announce yet, but several projects have been planned; for those projects, we are in early development, but yes, we will continue releasing this type of content.
Kusumoto prematurely confirms that the next mainline Sonic the Hedgehog title will include its own unique animated segment alike following projects despite having yet to announce them directly. Back at E3 this year, Sonic Team Head Takashi Iizuka verified in an interview that the next billboard installment for the Sonic franchise will arrive sometime in 2021: no other details surrounding the project have been revealed since the initial statement.
Also seeing that the previous Sonic Forces was before the implementation of Sonic cartoons imbedded in the title’s marketing, maybe the game would have been received differently if it was adopted then? Regardless, the concept to make these child at heart short films does show to work well in gaining the attention of fans for the next game, so it’s exciting to see what will come next.
In the latest break of news surrounding Sonic the Hedgehog, it looks that the potentially remade model for the protagonist’s featured film has been leaked a few weeks back. However, it has yet to be confirmed if this new render is the final reworked version of Sonic.
Did you enjoy watch the Sonic animated shorts for the last two games?
