The journey for Microsoft to tackle transmedia adventures with its Xbox IPs has remained a lengthy voyage. While promises for a Halo project sprouted back in 2013, it took nearly a decade for the show to air in 2022 on Paramount+. And, that was only short lived as the television series was canceled after two seasons in last July.

And although the show will live on via Netflix in certain territories, there is little excitement for that IP being adapted. At the same time, the same cannot be said for Fallout. Releasing in spring 2025, the show went on to deliver a new craze for the franchise in its games as well as for the universe. At the Emmys, it was nominated for 16 awards. And, the show was later ranked the #1 biggest release for Prime Video that year.

So what could the future potentially hold for the future of Xbox franchises on film or television? Well, with the upcoming release of Minecraft – another Xbox IP soon hitting theaters – Phil Spencer elaborates that the experience from both Halo & Fallout will direct how more projects will be handled in the future. Speaking to Variety, he said:

“We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more. We learned from doing ‘Halo.’ We learned from doing ‘Fallout.’ So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’”

Although confident in the future for more Xbox projects in Hollywood, there are already some announced prior to his statement. In 2022, and animated Grounded show was greenlit at Waterproof Studios/SC Productions. Additionally, Gears of War has been a work in progress as a featured film; it currently resides in development at Netflix. You can read the full report by heading here.
