8/10

Mika and the Witch's Mountain is undeniably a love letter to the past, much like A Hat in Time was just a few years ago. Both games masterfully capture the essence of old-school platformers, blending that nostalgic charm with modern touches that elevate the experience for today’s players. Whether you view it as an homage or a close relative to A Hat in Time, the game’s undeniable charm, from its whimsical characters to its enchanting world, creates a cozy, feel-good adventure that's hard to resist. No matter how many times I tried to tell myself I wasn’t playing a DLC for the game A Hat In Time, that’s all I could think about while playing this next game I’m about to review, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain.

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain transports players into a charming and magical world, where they follow the story of Mika, a young witch-in-training, eager to prove her worth to the witching community. Determined to complete her rite of passage, Mika takes on the important task of delivering packages to the island’s inhabitants. Along her journey, she encounters an array of eccentric and quirky characters, each with their own stories to tell. These characters not only provide Mika with guidance but also challenge her to grow as both a witch and a person.

The island of Mont Gaun, where the game is set, is a beautifully crafted environment filled with nooks and crannies just waiting to be explored. As players guide Mika across the island, they will find themselves immersed in the enchantment of the landscape. From dense forests to rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean, Mont Gaun invites curiosity and adventure. Every corner of the island is bursting with secrets and surprises, ensuring that players are constantly engaged in the exploration process.

Mika’s broomstick becomes a trusted companion, allowing her to soar through the skies and traverse the island with a sense of exhilarating freedom. The broomstick in Mika and the Witch’s Mountain serves a deeper purpose than just being a mode of transportation—it is an extension of Mika’s identity. As she hovers and glides over breathtaking vistas, players can feel Mika’s connection to the skies. The feeling of soaring through the air evokes a sense of wonder and liberation, allowing players to feel as though they are part of something magical.

Each delivery that Mika makes is more than just a job; it becomes a chance to form connections with the island’s inhabitants. These villagers react to her efforts in different ways—some are grateful, while others are quirky or demanding—but all of them contribute to Mika’s growth. Through these interactions, players build a meaningful bond between Mika and the world around her. The deliveries offer opportunities to not only make friends but also uncover hidden treasures and secrets scattered across the island. With each successful delivery, Mika gains a deeper understanding of the island’s rhythm and its people.

The game’s narrative centers around Mika’s personal growth, with her ultimate goal being to reach the mountain’s summit. This journey is not only a physical one but also a metaphor for Mika’s development as a witch. To succeed, Mika must earn money from her delivery jobs to purchase better, more powerful broomsticks. Each upgrade brings her closer to mastering the skies, and each broom symbolizes her growing skill and inner strength. As she progresses, the challenge of climbing the mountain reflects Mika’s journey from a novice witch to a skilled and confident one.

However, one can’t help but notice that Mika and the Witch’s Mountain bears a striking resemblance to A Hat in Time. From the character design to the island’s oceanic theme, the similarities between Mika and A Hat in Time’s protagonist, Hat Kid, are undeniable. Both characters sport a similar appearance, and their respective worlds share a cozy, nostalgic atmosphere that feels directly inspired by each other. The resemblance is so strong that at times, it feels as though Mika and the Witch’s Mountain has copied A Hat in Time’s homework, simply changing a few details to make it its own.

Despite the noticeable copying, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain manages to carve out its own space as a game worth playing. While the similarities to A Hat in Time are hard to ignore, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain delivers an experience that is almost as great as A Hat in Time. The game’s narrative and magical atmosphere draw players in, and its gorgeous visuals bring to life a world that feels like a cozy escape. The story, combined with the nostalgic graphics, evokes a sense of warmth reminiscent of classic Nintendo 64 games that many players cherished in their youth, such as myself.

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain is undeniably a love letter to the past, much like A Hat in Time was just a few years ago. Both games masterfully capture the essence of old-school platformers, blending that nostalgic charm with modern touches that elevate the experience for today’s players. Whether you view it as an homage or a close relative to A Hat in Time, the game’s undeniable charm, from its whimsical characters to its enchanting world, creates a cozy, feel-good adventure that’s hard to resist. Despite its clear similarities, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain carves out enough originality to stand on its own and is undoubtedly a must-play for fans of magical tales and nostalgic platformers.
