What do you get when you combine the world of cellphone repair with a game like Papers, Please? The answer is Repair This!

Repair This! is a witty, satirical take on the world of privacy, data security, and the lengths people will go to get their devices fixed on the cheap. At its core, the game explores the anxiety surrounding personal data loss and the often humorous desperation customers show when trying to cut repair costs. Drawing from the developer’s two decades of experience in the repair industry, many of the in-game scenarios are inspired by real-life interactions he’s had with customers. As someone with years of experience in the telecommunications and ISP industries myself, I can attest that these types of situations occur frequently, sometimes multiple times a month. The game’s sharp commentary is all too relatable for those of us who’ve dealt with frantic customers trying to safeguard their personal information or negotiate the lowest price for a fix.

The gameplay itself is fairly straightforward: you purchase phones from customers, repair their devices, and sell any excess spare parts you don’t need. Oh, and there’s also the little side hustle of selling their data on the black market—oops, let’s just pretend we didn’t mention that last bit! Beneath the surface, Repair This! cleverly pokes fun at the ethical gray areas repair shops sometimes navigate, mixing humor with a sly commentary on data privacy and how vulnerable personal information can be when entrusted to the wrong hands. It’s simple in concept but laced with an edgy, mischievous twist that keeps things entertaining.

One of the intriguing side storylines in Repair This! involves building a relationship with a secret agent who eventually tries to recruit you as an undercover government spy. The offer is tempting—especially with the promise of payment, which you can use to upgrade your repair shop—but the decisions you make as a spy come with a hefty dose of risk. Every action you take can lead to unforeseen consequences, so tread carefully. For instance, if you choose to clone the genome of a rare, valuable plant, you’ll be helping the city tackle its food crisis. However, even the most well-intentioned acts can have unintended ripple effects, and what starts as a noble effort could spiral into something far more complicated.

While Repair This! is easy to pick up and often delivers some laugh-out-loud moments, the overall experience is brief, leaving you wishing for more. One noticeable downside is the lack of an endless mode, which could have added significant replay value. Additionally, a minor but persistent frustration is the game’s poor English translation. I’m not sure which country or language the developer primarily uses, but the awkward phrasing and grammatical errors can lead to some confusion. Having to re-read instructions or dialogue in a game where speed is essential to completing tasks can be frustrating, causing unnecessary delays. While it doesn’t ruin the experience, it does create a bit of a stumbling block in an otherwise amusing and quirky game.

Despite these small shortcomings, Repair This! succeeds in delivering an entertaining experience that’s both funny and thought-provoking, even if it doesn’t stick around for long. If you’re looking for a quick, satirical break from more serious games, Repair This! is worth a try, especially for anyone who’s ever been on the customer service side of a repair counter.
