It was not too long ago, but who remembers the short era of mini consoles? Platform holders including Sega and even PlayStation pursued this new venture prior to the COVID-19 pandemic which capitalized on nostalgia with smaller and more capable hardware of previous generation machines. Before, Sega did this with the Sega Genesis Mini and with it came a collection of defining titles for the platform.
Additionally, this slowly faded as it appeared that what could be capitalized on the niché market was gone. Since then, we saw nostalgia-infused excitement return with Nintendo Switch Online. Once again with the Sega Genesis alongside the Nintendo 64 as both received virtual consoles as part of the new subscription tier. This option also went ahead to include add-on content at no additional cost.
However, Sega is back this week with a new product. Still on the Sega Genesis, the Japanese firm officially launches the Sega Genesis Mini 2. You can read the full list of supported titles add to this new system in the list below:
After Burner III
Alien Soldier
Bonanza Brothers: Wanted Dead or Alive
Night Striker
The Ninja Warriors
Lightening Force
Out Run
Out Runners
The Ooze
Rainbow Islands Extra
Rolling Thunder 2
Shining in the Darkness
Sonic 3D Blast
Splatterhouse 2
Super Hang On
Vectorman 2
Virtua Racing
That is not all; there are a few Sega CD titles as well – Mansion of Hidden Souls, Shining Force CD, Silpheed, and Sonic CD. Not to mention Fantasy Zone & Star Mobile which were bonus titles added to the Sega Genesis Mini 2. “The definitive mini console of 2019, the SEGA Genesis Mini, has been completely revamped!” Sega writes on the website.
“Its improved hardware is tucked away in a new, compact design based on the SEGA Genesis Model 2! In addition, the console now comes with the 6-Button Control Pad!” Noted, Sega goes on to press that the original Sega Genesis Mini controllers are supported on the update Sega Genesis Mini 2.
