Later this fall, the PlayStation 5 Pro will officially turn two years-old. The mid-generation refresh was announced with its own swirl of controversy with the features offered alongside the staggering $700 price tag. And while the specifications behind the casing does show how much Sony has improved on the base PlayStation 5, the new Pro model is more bespoke for a smaller player base than prior generations of the Pro line.

Especially with the asking price, it would be a tough challenge to overtake the PlayStation 4 Pro’s market performance with the $200 difference. The winter following its release, it was reported the console did end up falling behind its predecessor. Disregarding how it performed in that regard, Sony did promise that a better implementation of its PSSR would also be wired upon later in 2026.

Now with the release of Resident Evil Requiem this week, Sony Interactive Entertainment reveals that the new version of PSSR is here and uses the newest Capcom release to showcase the tech first-hand. You can view the comparison images below:

“With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of RE Engine to deepen the player’s immersion in horror. For example, each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon, allowing it to move realistically in response to body motion and wind. The way light passes through his hair changes depending on how the strands of hair are overlapped as well,” Capcom R&D foundational technology department senior manager Masaru Ijuin says.

“The upgraded PSSR has allowed us to elevate our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and textural particularities, which are traditionally difficult to upscale because of their intricacy. We hope you will experience this unprecedented level of horror and visual fidelity, and the new gameplay feel it delivers.”

Are you planning to try this new version of PSSR on PlayStation 5 Pro?
