Recently, Square Enix just shipped its latest installment in the Final Fantasy series – Final Fantasy XVI. From our review for the game: “Final Fantasy XVI is a true next-generation entry to the king of the RPG genre. With its breathtaking visuals, enchanting music, compelling storytelling, and engaging gameplay, it is a journey that will resonate with players long after the final credits roll.”
However, other endeavors, namely on the mobile front, has faced its demise. Already, a handful of Square Enix titles including Deus Ex Go were shuttered abruptly at the time. Additionally, the publisher also closed down battle royale Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier earlier in January as well. And another one is added to the chopping block this week.
In that, Just Cause Mobile is another project to meet this demise. Announced a few years ago now was past of a new approach to offer a new, free-to-play experience to players. But when speaking to Video Game Chronicles, the game will not go beyond its early access release. “It is with great sadness that we are announcing the end of development for Just Cause Mobile.”
Square Enix Just Cause global brand lead Anne-Lou Grosbois-Favreau continues: “the game will no longer appear on digital stores. It is never easy to put forth an announcement of this nature, especially to our fans who have been awaiting the release. We sincerely appreciate the support you have given us. Please note that any Blue Diamonds purchased during the Regional Early Access have been refunded in full to your Google Play Account on February 24, 2023”
The decision could play in part with the previous acquisition arrangement with Square Enix & Embracer Group. The Japanese publisher sold Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal to the firm for $300 million. Part of that included developed properties as well.
