The conversation of console exclusives are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Although pioneered by Xbox, this new business model has been embraced by PlayStation as well starting in August 2025. While Microsoft shipped Gears of War: Reloaded to PlayStation, Sony returned the favor with Helldivers 2 for Xbox. And this appears to be the tip of the iceberg as there are efforts to move away from the console-centric approach PlayStation is known for.
And, it is certainly easy to understand why. For the past year, Microsoft has been met with commercial success on the PlayStation Store. Whether its Sea of Thieves, Doom Eternal, or Forza Horizon 5, all three have been leading releases on its competitors’ storefront. Even more, there has also been record pre-order milestones achieved as well with the same titles leading in that regard as well.
Now with Helldivers 2 on Xbox, it is the same ordeal as well. More than a week passed, Helldivers 2 is the #1 best selling release on the Xbox Store. Additionally, Helldivers 2: Super Citizen Edition also tails behind the base game in the top 5 leading releases. The PlayStation title currently tracks ahead of major sports releases NBA 2K26 & Madden NFL 26 on the Xbox Store too.

The new found success is a given for PlayStation to further invest more in multiplatform titles. Since Helldivers 2 hit Xbox, there was a new player count record made for Super Earth. It was revealed that roughly 500,000 users were active across all platforms. Further research revealed that only 100,000 of that was on Steam pointing towards both PlayStation & Xbox supplying the remaining troops.
What’s more, this conglomerate of activity for the first proper PlayStation release on Xbox was not even a motion from the developer. In a previous exchange via Discord, CEO Shams Jorjani shared that PlayStation was the true force for Helldivers 2 to break from its console ultimately. You can read the full report by heading here.
