While a phenomenon in its own right, this only elevated when it was revealed that PUBG: Battlegrounds company Krafton would acquire Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment. Since then, there has been major emphasis on the series moving forward. Just recently, standalone ‘Subnautica: Below Zero’ is to hit PlayStation Plus free monthly games for all subscriber tiers.

Even more, the series is on the way to ship the next mainline installment too. Originally, Unknown Worlds Entertainment announced Subnautica 2 with ambitions to release the title sometime in 2025. However, that did not come to fruition. Instead, the game has since been delayed to 2026 as of July last year.

And while the series did find additional life on the original Nintendo Switch, Unknown Worlds Entertainment revealed that both Subnautica & Subnautica: Below Zero are to hit Nintendo Switch 2 later this week. These new versions are said to feature 60hz frames per second performance alongside 1440p/1080p resolution for both docked & handheld respectively.

“What has always made Subnautica special is the community around it, from the stories players share to the discoveries they make and the sense of wonder that comes from exploring an unknown world together,” producer Michael Verrette said. “Bringing Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero to Nintendo Switch 2 is about welcoming new players into that community, while giving longtime fans a chance to experience these worlds again in a way that feels fresh, smooth, and more immersive.”

The press release also clarifies that the Nintendo Switch 2 version is eligible for a free upgrade if owned on the original Nintendo Switch digitally. “Owners of Subnautica or Subnautica: Below Zero on the original Nintendo Switch can download the Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade pack at no additional cost via the Nintendo eShop.”
