Developer Firesprite Studios has remained in a unique standing despite the team’s output these past few years. While shipping games like The Playroom & The Persistence, it was acquired by PlayStation in 2021. This then led to the development of PlayStation VR 2 launch title ‘Horizon: Call of the Mountain’ later on in 2023.
Since then, the developer has quietly been working on multiple new projects that have yet to ship. In 2024, at the height of the Peacock TV show soon airing, Firesprite was reported to work on a new Twisted Metal project which was suddenly shelved then. Additionally, a separate report also indicated a new Until Dawn project was being handled by the developer following the release of the PlayStation 5 title that shipped around the same time.
From MP1st in March, it was reported that Firesprite Studios likely sometime before shipping The Persistence originally on PlayStation 4 was piecing together a Breaking Bad virtual reality game. Discoveries from the outlet’s investigation uncovered fragments from the production including the New Mexico desert & Walter White’s backyard.
The publication described the title to be a ‘narrative experience’ and not what a virtual reality game is in the tradition sense. It would focus on cinematic elements that likely took place in the show. MP2st also uncovered an interview with Variety in 2017 which revealed that show creator Vince Gilligan also collaborated with Sony Interactive Entertainment in at the time on a VR title. However, it was unsure the developer involved at the time until this new evidence was discovered.
“Making a video game is damn hard. It takes years and millions of dollars, especially when you’re trying to break new ground with VR. It never came to fruition though, which is a shame,” Gilligan told Variety in the interview. MP1st also discovered another sci-fi project that was shelved at Firesprite Studios before the PlayStation acquisition. Concept art was revealed through a former developer and took several notes from the likes of Dead Space.
Are you shocked Breaking Bad VR was never fully realized?
