The conversation for unionizing in the gaming industry has continued to become a larger talking point regarding the talent behind these major AAA releases. In the past, there has been major waves for large firms like Bethesda setting example for this effort; the first at Xbox Game Studios. Even recently with Rockstar Games, British labor union IWGB is going headfirst to protect those that were abruptly let go at the Grand Theft Auto developer in November.

Similarly, the same is expected for Ubisoft as more massive releases are stacking up for the publisher. It was recently uncovered through PEGI that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is on the way with rumors pointing to a 2026 release. And, it even acquired the March of Giants IP from Amazon Games Montreal; its plate is being loaded. And, Ubisoft Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada just scored the first major break for the publisher in the continent.

However, it was reported by Gamesindustry.biz that Ubisoft Halifax despite its recent victory is to be shuttering roughly a week following the announcement. In a statement to the publication, Ubisoft does explain that the decision is not reactionary to the union win for its Halifax branch, but rather a decision for the betterment of the company financially and purely coincidental.

“Over the past 24 months, Ubisoft has undertaken company-wide actions to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. As part of this, Ubisoft has made the difficult decision to close its Halifax studio. 71 positions will be affected. We are committed to supporting all impacted team members during this transition with resources, including comprehensive severance packages and additional career assistance.”

From Game Developer, CWA president Carmel Smyth stated it will be taking action on the decision made by Ubisoft. “We will pursue every legal recourse to ensure that the rights of these workers are respected and not infringed in any way.” Jon Huffman on behalf of the studio’s organizing committee also added: “The workers, their families, the people of Nova Scotia, and all of us who love video games made in Canada, deserve nothing less.”

Are you surprised by this development under Ubisoft?
