When framing the start of 2025, some of the most anticipated titles for the year sprouted from Capcom. Specifically, Monster Hunter Wilds. After roughly 7 years since the release of Monster Hunter World, a proper sequel was launching then. And online, there were waves of engagement. Came release of the game, Monster Hunter Wilds tracked over one million concurrent players within its first hours of release via Steam.

The days following, Monster Hunter Wilds broke new records for Capcom too. After three days, Monster Hunter Wilds shipped over 8 million copies. This milestone also dethroned 2024’s Resident Evil 4 which only sold 3 million copies in that timeframe. After a month, Monster Hunter Wilds reached over 10 million purchases. But to Capcom, it was expecting more.

Recently, Capcom president Haruhito Tsujimoto when speaking to Nikkei told that a large obstacle for the true sales potential of Monster Hunter Wilds is the pricing of the PlayStation 5, thanks Video Game Chronicle. In other regions like Japan & Europe, PlayStation 5 has faced price surges. Only recently was it officially flagged towards the United States now.

“The console costs around ¥80,000 ($540). Factoring in the cost of software and monthly subscriptions, it comes to around ¥100,000 ($675) at the time of purchase. This is not an easily affordable price, especially for younger generations. This situation is not limited to Japan, but is similar overseas,” Tsujimoto expresses.

Adding: “Our next challenge is to overcome these barriers and get Monster Hunter Wilds to more people. Sales and other events will begin in the future, so we are currently developing a strategy to take advantage of these opportunities to boost sales throughout the year.” He goes on to argue about affordability and podiums the Nintendo Switch 2’s success being more apparent when tied to its price tag.

“The Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June 2025 at a price of ¥49,980, and the response was better than we expected. While prices vary by country, this reaffirms the high level of cost-consciousness among ordinary consumers.” It is to assume that the publisher will tackle a port for the console from this comment, but, there is no confirmation on a Nintendo Switch 2 version as of writing.
