Game Awards’ winner for Best Action Game Dead Cells stood out in 2018 with its fast-paced action gameplay and justified difficulty brought players to playthrough the platformer’s story more than once. Despite the reception and awards Motion Twin received since the game’s August launch, the French developer says to not get your hopes up for a sequel.
Discussing pitches for the roguelike along with other discarded features with Game Informer recently, Sébastien Bénard of Motion Twin specified that there most likely won’t be a follow up to their nominated Indie of the Year title.
In terms of a sequel, we know for sure it’s not a good idea to dwell on your success. If you create a big hit, it’s best to use this energy to make something different. I don’t think we’ll make a Dead Cells 2.
Following Bénard’s statement, he also made a comment that if the studio decides to continue working on the roguelike platformer, it will to add more content to the already released game. “We’re more open to creating more content and opening the game up more to the community.” For what’s next for Motion Twin, the game designer said that the unannounced game will be unrelated to the current genre Dead Cells falls under.
Amid the reveal of the platformer’s imminent future, Bénard also discussed with the videogame magazine that the game we know now originally started off as a free-to-play tower defense before the transitions during development to bring the game we’re more familiar with now.
