In the two decade campaign of mainline installments and spin-offs that took place under the Final Fantasy banner – and well before the merge between Square & Enix – there are enticing announcements that came since the inception of the series. Currently, the franchise sits to be in a turning point with nearly a handful of releases underway. On mobile alone, there is Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier and Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis planned entering into 2022.

But, the series is also finding new additions to its current releases as well. For one, Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is arriving just next month. Even more, it is said to be exclusive to PlayStation 5 for the first six months, a new report reveals. Additionally, Final Fantasy XIV is expecting a new expansion. In that, Endwalker is expected to arrive to the ongoing game later this November as well.

In a new report from Fanbyte, Square Enix is preparing a new entry. But, the project is said to be outsourced to the Nioh developers, Team Ninja. In the report, it is told that the game is to be categorized as an action-RPG and to take the title ‘Final Fantasy Origin.’ However, this appears to be different to 2001’s Final Fantasy Origins for the original PlayStation.

Continuing on, the foundation of the game is told to be a souls-like experience that Team Ninja fans are surely familiar with already. Moreover, the plot is also told to possibly coincide with the original Final Fantasy from 1987. What might not appear too surprising is that the project is also indicated to be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive with a stray PC version as well, the report shares.

As per sources that spoke with Fanbyte that corroborated what is reported so far, the outlet also noted that the game is told to be in development under the division working on the already active project, Dissidia NT – a Final Fantasy fighting game. So aspects and other elements identified with Team Ninja already is expected to linger into Final Fantasy Origin as well.

Most interesting about the report is that even Bloomberg Tech’s Jason Schreier also cheers on his excitement for the game: essentially a green light that the game is in fact legitimate. “Will play the heck out of this,” Schreier wrote on Twitter.

Of course, the largest project underway for the overall franchise continues to be Final Fantasy XVI. Announced last summer, a new report previously indicated that the game already exceeded the requirement for base development, but is currently working on the more strenuous aspects of the game.
