A Nintendo and Illumination movie is seemingly planned to release on April 12, 2028. This is according to a chart from Universal Pictures International Spain that lists upcoming movies, including unannounced projects.
Nintendo hasn’t made any announcements about a new movie being in development. The only movie we know officially that’s in the works is The Legend of Zelda movie, which is being handled by Sony. With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie doing very well for Universal and Nintendo, there have been reports of multiple movies being pitched, including a Metroid movie and a Luigi’s Mansion Movie.
It’s Likely A Donkey Kong Movie
The next movie from Illumination, in their partnership with Nintendo, is likely Donkey Kong. The reason behind this dates back to a copyright that was filed in July 2025. The filing didn’t reveal the name of this project aside from “Untitled Donkey Kong Project”.
Another reason Donkey Kong makes sense is that the IP is arguably the next-most-popular after Mario.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to the Mario universe. We could say many different movies from Nintendo will come out in the next five years. However, Donkey Kong would make a lot of sense other than another Super Mario film. It’s also Shigeru Miyamoto’s character that was created in 1981.
As for who would star in a Donkey Kong movie, it would obviously be Seth Rogan, who voiced the character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
