Right now, Xbox is enroute to finding a new identity after roughly a decade of scrambling from the release of the Xbox One. While the firm pushed forward, the odds have only continued to stack against Microsoft’s consoles. Its most recent effort came this week where boss Asha Sharma shuttered further utilization of Copilot on Xbox and its surrounding ecosystem.

Elsewhere, the discussion of first-party exclusives has been an ongoing topic as well. According to leakers, whispers of the platform returning to this mindset has been ongoing with the new Xbox administration. Even in the ‘We Are Xbox’ pledge recently, Sharma has also coined reconsidering exclusive releases for Xbox as well.

But, this would be a major feat for Microsoft to turn its back against. This time last year, Microsoft was championed for being the most successful publisher then. And even now, similar results are showing. Alinea Analytics disclose that Xbox releases on PlayStation has now cleared 100,000 units for each of its thirteen releases thus far; generating roughly $660 million as of writing.

Head of market analysis Rhys Elliott highlighted successes like Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 5. It was reported earlier this year that the Playground Games port for PlayStation 5 sold over 5 million units with about $300 million generated from that alone. Starfield is also another that showed ample success early on. While only selling over 140,000 in its first week, it now sits at 207,000 which illustrates the game tapering off already.

Ahead of release, Starfield was leading pre-orders for PlayStation Store in multiple regions. The game even outnumbered pre-sales for Housemarque’s PlayStation 5 exclusive Saros. By late April that same month, Starfield was showing moderate success compared to its original 2023 release. The game showed to break sales charts for April 2026 with 95 percent of it accounting for PlayStation purchases.

Elliott concluded the report explaining that the conversation for Xbox & exclusive releases is anticipated to be fairly tame considering the success it faces with multiplatform titles. “Expect more tactical tweaks to exclusivity in the short term. Some titles will likely remain Xbox-first or Xbox-only, but if the data is any guide, they’ll be the ones a sliver of the PlayStation audience would have bought anyway. Many of these games have sold fewer than 300K on a 132M-player platform.”
