It has not been that long, but the announcement for PlayStation in 2028 going completely digital has remained a conversation for a couple weeks now. It is apparent that the firm is not backing from the decision. It already started converting one of its largest physical operations to kickstart production on new components by 2027. And, executives at Sony already sold off shares anticipating the decision will dip stock value significantly as well.

What’s worse is that the PlayStation firm also revealed in its terms of service that users could be locked out of their libraries from one clause. Section 21.2 reveals inactivity stretching over 36 months will retract access to your purchases. As for other notable effects that from the decision, developer relations have potential to sour as fan engagement remains overwhelmingly negative on social media for the past couple weeks.

Now in a new discovery from a recent update over at Crunchyroll, it is revealed that the Sony-owned platform is retuning its storefront. According to the FAQ that was issued recently, it reveals that the platform is to begin focusing on collectibles and other amenities as part of this restructure. Nowhere on the webpage does it reference physical media indicating it was purposefully left out.

“This August, we are transitioning the Crunchyroll Store to a brand-new shopping experience that will be available exclusively for Mega and Ultimate Fans. The new store captures the excitement of convention-exclusive merchandise—collectibles, curated drops, and limited-release products inspired by the anime series you love,” the page shares. This has been an ongoing trend with other retailers like GameStop with less focus on physical media on its shelves.

This clashes with efforts like its purchase of The Right Stuf International which focused on physical discs for anime, television, and film. The transition on echoes the decision to completely sever physical media as it has done at PlayStation already. Crunchyroll has offered namesake anime releases for popular IPs like Shenmue and still to come with PlayStation’s own Ghost of Tsushima as well.

Are you surprised by this decision from Sony?
