Nintendo also gave more information about the Gold Pass and that automatic subscription renewals have stopped:

“We stopped all automatic subscription renewals and new subscriptions to the Mario Kart Tour Gold Pass during the maintenance that was held at 11:00 p.m. PT on July 7, 2026, in conjunction with the game’s end of service at 11:00 p.m. PT on September 29, 2026.”

From August 4, 2026 to September 29, 2026, players can enjoy Mario Kart Tour Pass benefits, excluding continuous subscription benefits, for free.

Mario Kart Tour released in September 2019 for mobile via iOS and Android devices. On just its first day of release it accumulated 20 million downloads.

Other Hollywood, video game phenomena include Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Now with its fourth installment, the new film follows closely to the plot of Sonic CD starring Amy Rose & Metal Sonic. Filming just completed back in May. Even smaller production firms like A24 are taking the risk on video game movies. FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is planning to release in March 2028 with Alex Garland (Dredd, Ex Machina) to direct. 

And with the growing popularity of these films yet to reach the ceiling, the conversation has also pivoted to the previous trend: comic book films. The medium appears to be turning down the heat as films of the genre don’t generate as much as in previous years. Even The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin is vocal on the matter. On X, he revealed that the industry is already shifting the blockbuster trend.

In a later thread, Tomlin went on to elaborate that he has been offered more projects pertaining to video games over comic book adaptations. “My point of view is also born out of the fact that I am getting at least 5x more offers for video game adaptations than comic book adaptations this year.” Tomlin has previously confirmed that he did pen drafts for a Mega Man film which has yet to show signs of progress.

“I wrote a fun set of drafts and then I believe another writer came on some years later. Hope it gets made, there was a really emotional and surprising way in,” Tomlin elaborated in one response. Additionally, the conversation of preservation becomes even more apparent with the recent decision for Studio Canal. It was revealed that over 500 movies & TV shows are being pulled by purchase libraries due to licensing expiring starting this September. Not to mention the PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Vita storefronts officially sunsetting by 2027 as well.

Altogether, there are new extremes that are taking place at PlayStation. Recently, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has expressed his opinion on some decisions for the platform. When talking on the recent physical media concerns for PlayStation, Layden disclosed to Eurogamer that the decision was “a fairly dramatic decision.” Adding, “You don’t want to leave those people behind,” concerning fans that utilize & appreciate physical means for backwards compatibility.

I’ve been asked this question every year for the last 20 years. When are you guys going to just give up on the disc drive? My feeling with that was always: well, when I get to a place where I’m comfortable enough to believe that worldwide, broadband throughput is good enough to support that download experience, good enough to reach the majority of customers. Majority does not mean entirety, so there is a point, a tipping point.

This was not the only decision that Layden has criticized as of late. When speaking on the PSI Podcast, Layden also shared disagreement on Sony moving away from supporting its titles on PC. In May, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed previous reports that its focus on PC releases will be minimized. Now, only live-service games are the only exception. That was not Layden’s vision for the platform when he was still at PlayStation.

“First of all, the games don’t go on PC for like a year or whatever it is. It’s not day and date. And if they think that a game coming out 18 months after its launch on another platform somehow stopped a sale from happening 18 months ago in the hardware business, I would like to see how they can prove that thesis.

“You can feel that is true [but] I don’t happen to feel that’s true. If someone’s waiting 18 months for something to come on PC, we didn’t lose a sale to them. They weren’t going to buy the hardware anyway.” Layden in the interview did also elaborate on his standing for PC; still sharing interest in unique releases for console.

“I think exclusivity is very important to a platform business. […] Moving into PC or multi-platform releases is really about two things. The PC thing, in my mind anyway at the time, was not to make money, frankly, it was how do I get my intellectual property in front of people who wouldn’t normally see it? How do I get the world of Horizon to be seen by people who aren’t in the PlayStation world? Not necessarily because they’re going to buy a PlayStation.”

One project in particular still stands out amid discussions online: Marvel’s Blade. It was rumored that the game was in the crosshairs of being scrapped if developer Arkane Lyon is being shopped around. However, Matt Booty did indicate that an update on the game is anticipated for sometime later in 2026. But it appears that only half of that aforementioned rumor was true.

According to XBOX CEO Asha Sharma in the recent memo this week, she expressed that Microsoft as part of its restructuring efforts for XBOX include looking for potential buyers regarding Arkane Lyon. “In France, Arkane’s management is beginning required consultation with its Works Council to review potential strategic options,” she says

The concept has been coined for the developer the past couple of weeks as Microsoft looks to lighten on its spending where it can. However, The Verge corroborates the decision by revealing that one major influence was due to the growing budget for Marvel’s Blade. Senior correspondent Tom Warren says the project has “run over budget” which led to the decision ultimately.

And if Arkane Lyon does or does not exit XBOX, there is still the possibility it being a multiplatform release. While new XBOX leadership is clamping down on exclusives as of late, it was previously understood that the game is intended to ship on more than just its home console. Another thing that Apex Legends has been easing into is collaborations. In the past, we saw this with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with the ‘Lunar Rebirth Collection Event’ that arrived back in January 2025. Additionally and probably the most energetic collab yet was the ‘Apex Legends X Gundam Event’ we had just this past March. The popular Japanese franchise was injected into the core game with a Wild Card takeover event.

Now this week, Respawn Entertainment is back. In collaboration this time with Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Just recently, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II was announced with a new trailer scheduling a fall 2026 airing. This new collab arrives to Apex Legends on July 14th to August 4th. “Cyberware’s flooding the streets of E-District, bringing faster, riskier firefights and more dynamic positioning. Push your Cyberware to its limits and risk it all, but lean too hard on your chrome and there may be… consequences,” the new take on Wild Card reads. There will be the option between the quick dash Sandevistan chrome or the netrunner Blackwall Breach phase kit.

“Push your chrome too far and it’ll push back. Every Cyberware use increases your Cyberware Capacity. Hit your limit and you’ll go full Cyberpsycho and become a high-speed melee monster,” it adds. Symptoms of going Cyberpsycho includes High movement speed; Devastating melee damage; No weapons; No abilities; No shields; No ordnance.

The takeover event also paints E-District with a neon coat of paint inspired by Night City. “Night City has rolled in and made itself at home in E-District. Towering neon skyboxes, holographic koi drifting through the sky, and glitched-out signage across the map for the duration in Wildcard of the event.”

In its annual earnings, the firm disclosed that machine learning will aid to properly “unleash the creativity” for PlayStation. But what has yet to settle is the news regarding its physical releases. Come 2028, operations will cease for the platform in shipping physical copies for its titles.

On the topic of whether PlayStation will step back on its decision, it does not look likely. The firm did it in the past when it attempted to kill PS3 & PS Vita in 2021. But according to one report by ORF.at, it does not look likely to happen. Transcribed by Video Game Chronicle, it is understood that its largest production plant for Sony’s optical media is being restructured for new tech assembly.

It is disclosed that at least 300 employees were instructed by Sony as part of a reassignment to work on new equipment that will replace optical media players. Extensive retraining is said to take place in anticipation for manufacturing optical microlenses which will go into full production by 2027. It is reported that roughly €30 million has been invested into the DADC plant for this new effort.

In the time that followed PlayStation’s decision to put its physical production on a time limit, publishers have spoken against it publicly. Additionally, PlayStation is not hiding its efforts with artificial intelligence too. Previously in 2025, it announced a coop with AMD – Project Amethyst. The effort was said to improve development specifically with visuals & performance of its titles. And just this spring, Sony announced the acquisition of Cinemersive Labs to “contribute to our broader efforts in advancing state of the art visual computing within games.”

Recently, Sony released its FY2025 annual earnings. In the document, the PlayStation firm approached the conversation of AI and shared that the effort to integrate it into the gaming division will efficiently propel development for its platform that will “enhance the PlayStation experience” ultimately. “AI is not only for efficiency, but also a tool to empower creators to expand their creativity, making it easier to take on more innovative projects that were previously difficult to pursue due to constraints of cost and time,” Sony starts when speaking on AI.

As AI lowers barriers to creation and increases the volume and diversity of content, the PlayStation platform and studios are expected to remain critical in delivering high quality experiences and helping players discover the right content in an increasingly crowded landscape. Within the studio business, AI powered tools are automating repetitive workflows and improving productivity across areas such as software development, quality assurance, 3D modeling, and animation, allowing production teams to focus on building richer worlds and gameplay experiences.

“Across the platform business, AI is driving efficiency, personalization, and customer value at scale, while continued investments in AI and machine learning are expected to push visual fidelity forward and deliver higher quality player experiences,” it adds. Concluding that “AI is expected to unleash the creativity of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s studios, power a more curated and consumer-centric platform, and enhance the PlayStation experience, supported by its global player base, deep IP library, and integrated ecosystem.”

In the document, Sony goes on to elaborate a partnership with Bandai Namco to test generative AI and found success in development speeds. “Sony aims to continue to integrate its own technologies with generative AI to establish a creator-first production environment that maximizes creative potential while ensuring safety and security.”

This is not the only major change coming to ownership for PlayStation users as of late. It was announced on July 2nd that Sony Interactive Entertainment is preparing to withdraw production on its physical media in 2028. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” it wrote in a statement.

Simultaneously, PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Vita storefronts are also planning to shut down throughout 2026 into next year also.
